“STEP helped me realize that I had the ability and the potential to go to a really great school. I didn’t know that liberal arts colleges existed until STEP. Through STEP, I found Williams and was able to do a fly-in program, where I met so many smart people and really fell in love with the East Coast.”
Even though Ally is excited to be on the East Coast, “There was definitely a culture shock.” Of course, there’s the weather, but also, Ally reflects, “It’s mostly a white institution, with a lot of students coming from wealthy backgrounds. I’ve definitely found my little place here and I’m looking forward to making it grow. STEP made me realize that I deserve to be here. Alaska taught me how to find the best in the people I’m around – to make a community and build it.”
