The summer of 2023 was unlike any other for a group of STEP College-Prep scholars who embarked on a life-changing leadership expedition to the wilds of Alaska, thanks to our 20-year partnership with NOLS. Their reflections on the experience paint a vivid picture of adventure, growth, and resilience.
As the academic year comes to a close, we are thrilled to celebrate the incredible accomplishments of the STEP College-Prep Class of 2024.
From the bustling urban landscapes of Arizona to the rugged beauty of the Alaskan wilderness, these young adventurers followed their NOLs mentors and guides as they embraced challenges, uncovered hidden strengths, and forged unbreakable bonds.

As a Black male with first-hand experience growing up in a low-socioeconomic status household, Hassan wants to “implement public policy that doesn’t disproportionately affect low-income, marginalized students.”
This past summer, 36 STEPPERs accepted the invitation to kayak in Prince William Sound or backpack the Talkeetna Mountains for three weeks. No comforts. No amenities. No technology (including cell phones!). Could anything truly prepare them for the opportunity (and challenge) of a lifetime? Here’s what they said.
